  • So similar stuff has happened throughout history with the coming of more advanced technology. There use to be entire rooms of secretaries in order to do clerical work that has been replaced by Microsoft Office Suite. Their replacement by technology did not cause a total collapse of society so I don’t see why this would?

    It might make the world worse and drive down the standard of living for many but a total upheaval? If humans made it through the industrial age we’ll likely make it through the second technology age too. We won’t be unscathed but mankind survived the invention of the computer which was probably equally (or maybe more) disruptive.




  • Most big background check service companies are checking your criminal history directly with the court houses of where you’ve told them you’ve lived. Many will also verify your past employment directly with those companies as well. Depending on the company/job title they may also be checking your credit score/bankruptcy history or verifying degrees with universities as well. They don’t care about what data brokers have on you because they’re getting verification on things directly from official sources.

    I don’t know if you’re worried that your too “locked down” privacy wise for a background check to clear? I wouldn’t worry because if you’re using your countries equivalent of a SSN and living “on the grid” but not online at all they’ll still be able to get the info they need/want anyway. I’ve had employees who didn’t even have emails or own phones/computers clear background.










  • Is this some sort of weird “for legal reasons we had to post it but we don’t actually want anyone to put in an offer” type things?

    Like with the super specific H1B job postings designed so that only 1 person (preselected) is likely to qualify. But they had to post it because it’s a government policy.

    I guess I’m asking how this is helping someone avoid some sort of fee/tax on $169,000?

    Edit: Guys condos don’t always come with land ownership which is why I thought something was dodgy here. Does anyone know if condos in Oregon include the land under them?


  • I worked in HR for a while and 80% of the job was telling managers/execs “you can’t do that to an employee”. It was defending the employee, arguing for better programs, planning events for employees/associates/team members. I paid for a Christmas event out of my own pocket one year because I was told there was no funding. I never got badmouthed or trashed by a manager. But after fighting everyday for associates it was really disheartening to see them say stuff like the person youre replying too. It’s one reason people who aren’t corporate shills get out of HR. You spend your day advocating for people and they turn around and spit in your face. After awhile you just ask yourself why am I turning myself inside out for these people who hate me?




  • Marking it as confidential in an email is not them telling you that you can’t share your own info. It’s warning you that the info inside the email may be something you don’t want to open when presenting etc.

    A lot of companies will try to discourage you from talking about your pay. Unless they actually take action against you (i.e. teprimand/firing) there isn’t anything that you could bring to HR or a court.

    Your reaction seems extreme for what would be typical corporate policy (i.e. confidential on an email like that).



  • Manager: “Torrential rain at our customers location means we’re going to have to move priorities, I just got the email 5 minutes ago.”

    Sup 1: Our new pioritizes mean we’re running the lathe. We cant pivot to project Y because the metal for that was cut incorrectly and the new order is on backorder. We can use that metal to make order K but well have to manually cut it down."

    Sup 2: “Tim called out this morning, I can rearrange my department to cover most positions but not that one, can I get John from you to run the lathe? Gary is the most qualified but his sister filed for divorce from Doug on saturday. Doug has to interact with the lathe position all day and itll cause issues.”

    Sup 1: “I can give you John if I can get Frank from department X to help cover down.”

    Sup 3: " I can give Frank up but were having a baby shower for Rachel at 1400 and Ill need him back for that."

    Sup 1: “Thats fine we have maint scheduled for today well just do that then.”

    Manager: “Now that we’ve had our 5 -10 minute start up meeting no one do anything. Lets call the IT guy on the other side of the country who hates meetings and get him to program the details of todays resource allocation into joemos skynet. He says its way more efficient than us talking for 5 fucking minutes at the start of the day. It definitely has a section for you’re most experience lathe operators sister is divorcing the forklift driver in another department. Joemo skynet can then text its plan into the ether cause 10% of the floor doesnt even have a working phone number and 99% dont have computer access. Joemo definitely understands the manufacturing industry.”

    If you know of a good way to automate leading humans out of manufacturing then youll make millions and CEOs will love you. Because if theres one thing computer systems are definitely great at its dealing with completely unique and non black and white information especially without a human having to manually input it.
