Because these are literal sky scrapers. Fire on a wood structure is a recipe for catastrophic failure. A fire in a large structure could have similar effects to those large high rise condos that collapsed in Florida from poor maintenance.

This is very likely dangerous deregulation of the fire code to cut costs being “green washed” as a new thing that needs a hell of a lot more scrutiny. Building large structures with wood WAS a thing in the past, it was outlawed because it’s EXTREMELY dangerous when one of those structures ignites.

They’re only getting away with it because these are composite timbers which have been “tested” to be safer. I’m very skeptical that those tests are comprehensive, at least to the point where I would feel comfortable spending a significant portion of my life in one of these buildings.

Democrats are going to lose their Senate majority in no part because people decided it was better to harass Manchin into not running. Elliott is definitely much more progressive than Manchin ever was.

Elliott lost by a LANDSLIDE. How do you rationalize that? Shouldn’t it have at least been close? Was he just not “progressive enough”?

Because as much as Palestine is supported on lemmy there’s a lot of support for Israel within the party as well.

Part of what the Trump campaign did successfully was make both of those caucuses believe that Democrats can offer them nothing while Trump might offer them a solution.

In practice, I would be surprised if Palestine isn’t leveled under the Trump administration with prejudice. Trump hasn’t been particularly kind to Muslims from what I’ve seen.

Obama in his book says similar things about the filibuster. It’s his major regret, not ending it when he had the chance so that he could’ve done more.

The better place to have this fight is through congress anyways. They’re the ones that actually approve the aid.

Better yet, go talk to the Israel people and get them to vote for someone that stops using our weapons in such an offensive manor. Israel knows that their position is critical to the US interest and their current leaders are happy to exploit that.

Literally, abstaining makes you part of the “party of not voting” and nobody does anything for them, because they don’t vote.

Abstaining from said battle is effectively saying “I don’t care” and letting Trump do what he will. If he chooses to send nukes to Palestine to end the conflict immediately, that’s on everyone that abstained. If he ends aid to Ukraine and those people die, that’s on everyone that abstained.

If he ends voting, you “won some moral battle” but you’ve all but permanently lost the war against genocide as the most powerful military and weapons on the planet are now in the hands of an authoritarian, raciest, fascist, regime that previously imposed a “Muslim ban” and I’m sure would happily do so again.

There is no hypocrisy here, and it’s disingenuous to imply there is.

If you want to protest genocide, then GO DO IT, don’t throw away a vote because that’s not a protest, it’s a pathetic excuse.
