  • Most Piped instances are also not working because they use NewPipe Extractor under the hood.

As someone else said in this thread, I have also temporarily switched to FreeTube for Android, because a few of the Invidious instances are still working fine.

The nice thing about the FOSS world is that it’s pretty easy to import subscriptions and other stuff from NewPipe to FreeTube.

I hope this YouTube fuckery is handled soon. I love NewPipe way more every time it successfully deals with the YT weirdos.

  • and every single one of my friends created accounts and hopped on to chat rooms

FOMO and Privacy usually do not mix well. Unless you can come out of “All my friends are doing it, so it must be cool” mindset, you will find it difficult to appreciate privacy.

    You yourself said

and that social life also includes the use of social media apps

Note the keyword “includes”. So Social Life is not JUST social media apps. As someone mentioned already, dating starts best with face to face interactions.

Have you tried the good old phone number exchange, may be to try out texting?

Lastly, if someone wants to understand the real me based on my Instagram profile and activities - I would stay away from that person. YMMV.

  • I do. Almost always. And there are three main reasons for it.

    (A) Hassle free prep. Hot water and stirrer, bam!

    (B) No waste/by-products (e.g. filter, brewed coffee granules residue, blah blah) - so much less carbon footprint.

© A cup of instant coffee has slightly less caffeine content than the same cup of freshly brewed coffee. Good for me, because I have been a caffeine-addict, and trying to cut down now.

So I always try to go for Freeze-dried instant coffee ( especially Colombian, like Juan Valdez ), and not the Spray-dried shit.

  • “Stilted”?

You sir, are one of those fucking amazing people who profusely apologize for not being a native English speaker and then blurt out 37 paragraphs of perfect English.

You have nothing to be ashamed of - your English is better than a lot of them native speakers ! And always remember this :

“You are speaking English because that is the only language you know; I am speaking English because that is the only language you know. We are not the same.”

And as to your original question - if I ever ask them “what evidence did you see which proves X happens?”, I have almost always been hit with the reply, “Oh yeah? What proof do you have that says X does not happen???”. And then I tell them the anecdote of the Invisible Dragon by Carl Sagan. Look it up if this is new to you, and for a more formal treatment, check out Karl Popper’s theory of Falsifiability.

I have personally converted at least one conspiracy theorist to being an Agnostic. So I know it works. Try them out, it’s fun.

And I also am not a native English speaker to be honest :-)

  • I use Jerboa as well as my main lemmy client (Voyager being the stand by). I like the vintage feel of Jerboa, at the same time can’t deny the fact that Jerboa is the oldest and battle-tested client among all.

The only thing Jerboa is missing is a complete search functionality (currently it just searches for communities).

As soon as the capability to search for posts and communities (IIRC a bug was raised in Jan 2022 for this by dessalines himself) - Jerboa will arguably be the best lemmy app around.

  • I will try to do an ELI5.

Piped is what is known as a “proxy”, or rather an interface to YouTube.

There is a very popular piece of code called NewPipeExtractor, which is used to scrape data from the YouTube website.

Piped utilizes NewPipeExtractor to set up an “intermediary”, a proxy website that looks and feels pretty much like YouTube.

The good thing about watching videos through the Piped proxy site is that YouTube doesn’t get to know your IP address. Which is why it is very popular among privacy advocates.

That is it in a nutshell. If interested, you will find more information in their GitHub page.

    Hope this helped.
