  • I live in a desert (Southwest USA), and gravel/rock yards are everywhere. The biggest issue I have with my desert landscaping is that the rock surface is very unstable, which makes it difficult to walk on for my elderly mom. We switched to the smallest “chat” rocks, which are easier to walk on but get caught in our shoes and dragged into the house to scratch floors and hurt bare feet.

Better than cement, not as good as a permeable surface such as compacted decomposed granite or ground cover plants. I miss having at least a small plot of lawn that can be walked on, but can live without it. What the desert needs most, though, are more trees to shade surfaces. We have acres of concrete and asphalt, which contribute way more to the heat than rock landscapes.

  • That’s odd. Are you not seeing a subscribe button at all (on lemmy.ca) when you go to the !cats community or are you clicking the button and nothing happens?

In regard to the other instances, you should be seeing a message in the sidebar of each cat community that states “You are not logged in, but you can subscribe…To do this, paste the following into the search field of your instance: !cats@lemmy.ml”. You should be able to copy the !cats address, paste it into the search box on lemmy.ca (which is where you are logged in), click the search button, and the community should appear with a Subscribe button.

If you don’t see subscribe buttons at all then you may have to complete the config file fix linked to by @jeena@jemmy.jeena.net

  • What I find frustrating is that on iOS, the system put my Ice (Mastodon) icon into a Social folder but my Narwhal app was placed in Information and Reading! So my muscle memory has me tapping an icon in a different folder and I can’t move Ice to where I want it. I’m trying to train myself to use the PWA links on my Home Screen for sh.itjust.works and kbin.social but it’s a struggle.

Edit: just to be clear, I’ve never understood why Narwhal was put in the Information folder instead of Social.

  • I don’t think it has communities like Lemmy - it all seems to be kbin.social so it is all local. However, if you head over to Lemmy and locate the communities you want to follow from their big list (like the beehaw.org communities), you can add them to your kbin subscriptions and follow along from kbin. The only difference I’ve found is that Lemmy community links start with the ! sign, so that has to be changed to @ when you search for the community through kbin.

Edit: I’m keeping my kbin and my sh.itjust.works accounts for now to see which I prefer.
