So you’re a little older, on a fixed income, don’t have a support system nearby, don’t have a place you can stay that has dedicated bathroom facilities or even room to stand up indoors, and you just had a not-insignificant surgery that comes with, at a minimum, laparoscopic incisions, and could significantly affect the way your body processes its diet.

You may well be doing fine, but I’m not calling out either the doctor or the social worker here. Pushing you a little and making you insist you’re happy was a reasonable call.

I have an ortho I made, and I just couldn’t get used to it. I’ve never had any keyboard-related RSI, and my “spider dance” typing is very much a hand-eye coordination task, so… ehhh. No neuroplasticity for it.

I don’t know of anything marketed as such, though some ortholinear POS terminals can be easily repurposed into big keyboards. The ortho users tend to be very interested in ergonomics, and one of the guiding principles there is minimizing hand movement (sometimes I personally think this goes a bit far; it seems to me that if it’s good to move the rest of your body from time to time, it’s good to move your arms and hands too). Most of them are quite small. The biggest size I’ve seen regularly is 75 keys in a 15x5 grid. Of course, ortho/ergo is also a very DIY-friendly space, so sometimes you see… outliers. LOL.

So a little bit of investment in stadiums here, a new TV deal there, some exciting QB play, and a sprinkling of Canadian exceptionalism… Sorry, wrong CFL.

Some people think that failing ballasts will trigger their thermal protection, so it could be as simple as cooler weather or components that are failing but haven’t yet, and a little variability in temperature or the intial jolt of electricity may make it work for a while. I generally found CFLs to be finicky and annoying after a while, though i don’t recall ever having one that seemed to die completely and then come back.

It’s also worth pointing out that rhyming is not the only way to get those pattern-recognition neurons firing. Meter in poetry/lyrics is all about this, and the Ancient Greeks knew all about it. They also knew all about mnemonic tropes (wine-dark sea) and other devices. Old English in particular built most of its poetry and songs around alliteration rather than rhyming.

But when I went back to my alma mater, the University of Iowa in Iowa City, I went to the library where they have all my papers, and I was stunned to see an exchange of memoranda between me and Gene Roddenberry that I had totally blocked out. Once I read them, I understand why I blocked them. It was very toxic, very venomous. He hated the script. I guess I didn’t know any better, so I was intemperate. I responded intemperately.

Normal human me completely agrees with you. Even just within the American military tradition, it’s rarely the troops who saw the most death, or the officers who sent the largest number of them into it, who are the most gung ho about glassing countries and being badasses.

There are things, even flawed things, that might be worth fighting for, but nobody should ever be happy about it. And maybe this is a bit paternalistic of me, but if there are 20 year old idiots who think otherwise, then it’s up to their leaders to protect them (and everyone else) from those strong little boys’ worst instincts. If you make it into middle age and haven’t learned that, you’re probably a bad person.
